How Should I Prepare My BMW For Winter?

The Chicagoland weather has taken a turn and the roads are getting slick.  If you have not checked over your BMW for the winter season, it is not too late. Read on for a quick safety checklist. Schedule your certified BMW service at Bill Jacobs BMW in Naperville with any one of our factory-trained technicians.

Check Your Tire Tread Depth

Check the tread depth on your tires. Navigating midwest winter driving conditions means you should have a good amount of tread depth.  To determine if your tires have a safe for winter tread depth, take a penny and turn it upside down; the tread should cover up Lincoln’s head.  If it doesn’t go up to his head consider new tires from Bill Jacobs BMW. We use genuine OEM tires recommended for your model.

If you are buying new tires and have an all-wheel drive or 4×4 vehicle, it is best to replace all 4 tires.  If you have different tread depths on the tires, you may damage the transfer case or differentials.  This may sound a bit far-fetched and dramatic, but it is absolutely true.

Keep A Spare On Hand

Have a plan on what to do if you get a flat in this weather.  If you do have a spare check it and make sure it is operable.  Also, before you make a winter road trip make sure you know how to access your spare.  If you need a new spare tire for your BMW, you can find genuine OEM tires at Bill Jacobs BMW in Naperville.

Check Your Battery

This time of year batteries will take a real beating.  Most of us turn on our headlights in the morning and on our way home with shorter days, heaters are running full blast, heated seats and steering wheels are turned on high, and we are using electric defrosters.  This can really put some strain on the battery so make sure you are ready. Schedule a complimentary multi-point inspection at Bill Jacobs BMW to confirm your car’s battery is at its peak health.

Check Your Tire Pressure

When the weather gets cold, your tire pressure may drop.  If you drive your vehicle and it doesn’t get back up to normal pressure quickly, you may need to add some air. Driving on a tire that is underinflated will result in poor handling and will hydroplane much easier in wet conditions. If the TPMS system in your BMW is sending erroneous pressure readings and warnings, schedule a complimentary multi-point inspection at Bill Jacobs BMW to have your tire pressure monitoring system checked.

Change Your Windshield Wipers

Get some good winter wipers so they will keep your windshield nice and clean in the bad weather.  If you know it is going to snow, put your wipers up.  This prevents them from sticking to the windshield or getting burried in snow. The quality of your windshield wipers are one of the many safety items checked when you schedule a complimentary multi-point inspection at Bill Jacobs BMW.

DO NOT PUT HOT WATER ON YOUR WINDSHIELD.  IT WILL CRACK.

Check Your Coolant Reservoir

If your coolant level is low this can affect the performance of your heater.  The heater operates off the coolant in the engine, which is why it takes a few minutes to warm up.  If the coolant level is too low, you could possibly have air in the system and air pockets will prevent your heat from working. Schedule your Coolant Fluid Exchange at Bill Jacobs BMW and let our factory-trained service technicians take care of your BMW using genuine OEM parts.

Check All Exterior Lights

When you turn on your car in the morning take a little walk around it and make sure all of your lights work. It is that time of year when it is dark when most of us head out in the morning and dark when we are coming home. Visibility is everything and this can also help you avoid a fix and repair ticket!  Check your head lights, tail lights, brakes, turn signals, and fog lamps.

Change Your Air Filter

A clogged up filter can negatively affect fuel economy and performance.  At the end of a miserable and wet winter, the filter tends to get filled with dirt and sometimes gets some water on it restricting air flow. Come to Bill Jacobs BMW in Naperville for your engine air filter replacement.
