BMW iX Design

The design of the 2022 BMW iX is a departure from the like-sized X5. The new BMW grille is present on the iX, with a polyurethane layer that allows light scratches to melt away under the heat of the sun or a hairdryer. With a curvy rear body and exterior handles sunk into the doors, the iX has a bold design for better aerodynamics and driving efficiency.

Inside the first-ever BMW iX xDrive50 is a modern and luxurious cabin. A large, curved panel houses two screens measuring 12.3 and 14.9 inches. The number of buttons and switches has been cut in half, and there are several new features, including 5G connectivity, augmented-reality navigation, and the capability to use a phone as the key. That works without having to hold it up to the door handle; just walk up and the car unlocks as it does with the fob. Other tricks include the ability to record a parking maneuver up to 650 feet long—say, driving up a long driveway and backing into a garage—that the car will mimic at the push of a button. There is also plenty of legroom in the back seat of the BMW iX xDrive50.

Power Behind the iX xDrive50

Powering the xDrive50 are two motors, one per axle, that combined spin out 516 horsepower and 564 lb-ft of torque. Those 516 ponies put the iX just below the output the current X5 M50i gets from its twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8, though the gas-powered X5 makes slightly less torque (553 lb-ft). The power behind the 2022 BMW xDrive50 gives this electric machine the ability to go 0 to 60 in four seconds.

With a range of 310-plus miles, the BMW iX xDrive50 is an impressive electric machine. The BMW iX xDrive50 has a combined 88 MPGe. It steers and handles well for a nearly three-ton SUV optimized for efficiency, and the optional rear-wheel steering goes un­­noticed until you realize how tidy it makes the iX feel on the road and in parking lots.

BMW iX xDrive50 Price

With a starting MSRP of $84,195, the 2022 BMW ix xDrive50 is priced competitively for being a luxury electric SUV.  The much anticipated BMW iX xDrive50 stands strong against luxury electric SUV competitors. Mercedes-Benz has yet to build an electric mid-size SUV. Audi’s e-tron has about two-thirds the range of the BMW iX. The Tesla Model X is much more expensive than the BMW iX.

BMW Electric Future & the iX xDrive50

BMW plans to have half its global sales to be electric vehicles by 2030. To avoid using rare-earth elements, BMW employs electrically excited motors rather than the permanent-magnet type. And although the latter is more efficient, BMW claims 93 percent efficiency for its powertrain. EVs don’t typically have tachometers, but the iX and i4 do.
