Bill Jacobs BMW Going Green

Bill Jacobs BMW: An Eco-Advanced Auto Dealership

Developed to be one of Illinois' most environmentally advanced dealerships with attention to the LEED guidelines.

As we began planning for our new dealership, we decided to start Moving in the Right Direction - continuing to grow as an organization while developing a more eco-advanced retail facility.

BMW and MINI Showrooms Building Contruction
  • Site development is designed to balance the amount of existing fill on the property to minimize the amounts of soil that would have to be trucked to or from the facility
  • The existing asphalt has been pulverized on site and reused as a base for the building and parking areas
  • Showroom will have a southern exposure to control natural sunlight in the winter and summer
  • The insulation of the building is 15% better than the Department of Energy requirements
  • White roofing reduces AC use by 10%
  • Natural air ventilation circulated through the building
  • Low or no VOC paints are being used in the office and showroom areas to provide a healthy atmosphere for employees and customers
  • HVAC units in shop area are high efficiency units utilizing energy recovery systems, which pull the heat from the air prior to it being exhausted, and transfer the heat back into the conditioned building
Conserving, Reusing & Recycling
  • Car wash has a water reclamation system which is comprised of a 3-part filtration tank recycling all the water used in the car wash
  • All lighting is provided by high lumen per watt fixtures. No incandescent lighting is used in the facility. The overall interior lighting power use is 1.25 watts per square foot, well below the current energy code requirements for an automotive dealership
  • All appliances in use shall be Energy Star rated for energy efficiency
  • All toilet facilities have touchless, sensor controlled Sloan Ecos dual flush toilets with 1.6 gallon full flush and 1.1 gallon reduced flush for reduced water use. EverGreen sensor controlled urinals shall use a mere 1 quart of water compared to standard 1 gallon use for 75% water savings
  • Dyson hand driers will replace paper towels in all bathrooms
  • Used tires will be compacted by Tire Shark, which punctures and compresses the tire to 1/3 of its size for ease of transport to the tire recycling facility
  • All construction materials are separated on site in individual dumpsters to be taken to the appropriate recycyling facilities
  • Office operations are being developed to minimize paper use
  • Tile flooring and clinker tile flooring for long term maintenance are being used in showrooms and shop areas and natural cork or a linoleum flooring product shall be utilized in much of the office areas to reduce allergens
  • Equipment hoists utilize vegetable oil in the hydraulic components to eliminate the chance of any contamination of the ground should a leak occur
